ID 359-001/ID 559-001: Soft Space - Collective Craft and Spatial Textiles

MWF 12:00-12:50 p.m. | Prof. Jennifer Meakins

Throughout this course, students will investigate the relationship between craft, spatial design, and experience employing hands-on making, material experimentation, and collaborative exploration. Students will engage in readings, discussions, and workshops to learn about and test a range of craft techniques, including weaving, quilting, and soft construction, along with digital tools, such as digital knitting, Grasshopper, and coding. Working in the College of Design’s SoftLab, students will move between hand-making and machine processes to test how textiles can shift in scale, structure, and use. The course will culminate in a collective project that will allow students to apply their explorations in response to site, material, and collaboration. This course is open to all students interested in making, materials, and spatial experimentation—no prior experience with textiles or related equipment is required.
