Workshop and Talk Descriptions

Workshop 1: Wires and Noise
with Chad Eby, SA/VS, 10:00 - 12:00pm

Every knob is a spaceship.

Wires and Noise is is a workshop about exploring and creating sound using virtual modular synthesizers. We'll use modular's unique workflows to generate electronic sounds and noises that may be used as raw material for sound art/sound design work—or as part of music production.

No previous knowledge or experience with music or sound synthesis is required. Even if you've never thought of yourself as a "sound person," you may find the sort of structured thinking involved in working with modular helpful with reasoning about other topics including narrative structure, user experience, iteration, chance operations, transformation, sequencing, and creative process in general.

Workshop 2: Visual Storytelling
with Bryce Oquaye, 10:00 - 12:00pm

Showcasing the range of visual storytelling from sequential media to promotional imagery.

Workshop 3: Light Structures
with Jordan Hines, SoA, 12:00 - 2:00pm

During this workshop, students will construct large freestanding structures which are self-supported.
We will explore the relationship between form-finding and structure through hands-on model-making. Lastly, we will study the models with light and color.

Workshop 4: Comics (!) in the Design Process
with Carly Hagins, PRD, 12:00 - 2:00pm

In this interactive, drawing-centered workshop, we'll discuss the basics of storyboarding (also known as sequential drawing) and how it can be helpful at various points during the design process. We'll create a series of storyboards, both as individuals and as a collective group. No drawing experience necessary; all skill levels are welcome.

Workshop 5: Presentations
Generating Big Ideas
with Ryan Hargrove, LA, 12:00-1:00pm

Acknowledging the ability to generate (big) creative ideas is both (1) an approach during the problem state but also (2) a mindset and way of seeing and experiencing the world throughout your daily life.
Of particular importance here is that (2) serves as the fertilizer for (1), which is where most people are focused. For the purpose of this workshop it may be most productive to focus on (1) but acknowledge the larger context of (2) as the life of all creative inspiration. In many ways without awakening (2) the impact and adaptability of (1) is severely limited.

Failure is Essential
with Mia Cinelli, SA/VS, 1:00 - 2:00pm

Milton Glaser defined design as "moving from an existing condition to a preferred one"— but what happens in between? Diving into common processes and pitfalls, Associate Professor Mia Cinelli speaks to why iteration, feedback, and failure are essential to a successful creative practice.
