Heinrichs named Director of International Studies
The University of Kentucky College of Design has appointed Johanna Heinrichs, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of Architecture, as Director of International Studies for the College.
“I am thrilled to take on this new role at the College of Design,” Heinrichs said. “I look forward to helping to enrich the College’s already strong education abroad offerings and to develop a culture of global engagement across the College.”
In her new role, Heinrichs will collaborate with academic unit directors, faculty and Dean Ned Crankshaw to expand global exposure and cultural/design immersion opportunities for students, faculty and staff. She will promote international learning opportunities, support visiting students and faculty, help faculty develop study abroad programs and work with communications to share these opportunities with the College community.
As the College’s liaison to UK’s International Center, she will also represent the College of Design on the University of Kentucky International Advisory Council and Education Abroad Committee.
Heinrichs joined the faculty of the School of Architecture in 2017 and brings a strong international perspective to her teaching and research. Her scholarship focuses on villa culture in 16th-century Venice and the Veneto, the work of the architect Andrea Palladio, as well as urbanism and hospital design . Her work has been supported by the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation and the Italian Art Society. This research most recently culminated in the publication of her book, Villa and Palace in the Venetian Renaissance: The Palladian House Between Country and City, published by the esteemed Cambridge University Press. This summer, she co-led a faculty-directed education abroad program to Italy, providing students with immersive learning experiences in architectural history and design.
Prior to joining the College of Design, Heinrichs taught at Williams College, Dominican University and Northwestern University. She holds a Ph.D. in Art and Archaeology from Princeton University, a Master of Philosophy from the University of Cambridge and a bachelor’s degree from Williams College.
“International study and exchange are vital to the education of future designers,” Dean Crankshaw said. “Dr. Heinrichs’ leadership will ensure that our college community is equipped with the cultural and professional experiences needed to succeed on a global stage.”
