Study design and sustainability while traveling from the mountains of Kentucky to the cultural centers of France. HMN 300: Sustainable Futures Design Lab is a project-based course from the Gaines Center for the Humanities. This immersive class explores design and sustainability in post-mining communities and takes that work far beyond the classroom. This course for creative, collaborative thinkers ready to engage in hands-on design projects.

The journey will include

  • Mid-Semester (Spring Break): Design explorations and immersive workshops in Eastern Kentucky (approx. 4 days)
  • Post-Semester (May/June): A 19-day trip to France (Grenoble, St. Étienne, and Paris) with design workshops, cultural excursions, and collaboration with local artists and designers

Scholarship Support

All selected students will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the Gaines Center for the Humanities, with additional funding opportunities potentially available through Education Abroad.
