Preservation Futures Elizabeth Blasius and Jonathan Solomon
How should preservation, which operates under frameworks prescribed by federal law, respond when federal direction conflicts with the profession's values?
Though this question has made headlines in the last year around everything from the demolition of the East Wing of the White House to the removal of references to Trans Americans from the official history of the Stonewall Riots, it it reveals long term, structural conflicts in preservation work. Elizabeth Blasius and Jonathan Solomon, partners in the firm Preservation Futures, share their approach to preserving historical experiences that fall outside of the nationalist narratives that frame federal preservation law, through three projects to support the preservation of Black history in Chicago.
