Radtke and Luhan Receive 2023 IDEC Media Award
The Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) selected Rebekah Radtke and Dr. Gregory Luhan and their co-authored publication, Global Studio: Shanghai – Louisville, as the winner of its 2023 IDEC Media Award. The official award presentation will occur at the 2023 IDEC Annual Conference in Vancouver, BC, during the IDEC Awards event on Friday, March 10, 2023.
The Global Studio: Shanghai – Louisville highlights an immersive, interdisciplinary collaboration developed in the College of Design to enable international experiences to document and analyze architecture, landscapes, and interior spaces in historic and modern Eastern megacities.
The IDEC awards committee noted, “The book beautifully highlights international learning experiences for interior designers and architects. The experience of working with practitioners and Chinese students appears to have been rich and productive experiences. The graphic design and image quality are excellent.”
University of Kentucky Associate Professor of Interiors Rebekah Radtke and Texas A&M University Ward V. Wells Endowed Professor of Architecture, Dr. Gregory Luhan, formerly the John Russell Groves Endowed Professor of Architecture in the University of Kentucky-College of Design positioned the work to enable interactions with world-renowned firms and produce an interdisciplinary learning community that could inform Western spatial patterns and design pedagogy.
The embedded experiences provided students with international opportunities where the students explored historical contexts, developed representational techniques, and utilized material fabrication as outputs. In addition to the travel and professional interaction, the Global Studio: Shanghai – Louisville included public exhibitions of the studio work and open-to-the-public lecture series featuring architects, designers, planners, preservationists, developers, and scholars chronicled in the award-winning publication.
