Spanish architect Nerea Feliz Arrizabalaga is an assistant professor in the University of Texas at Austin School of Architecture where she teaches in the Interior Design program. Her lecture, Outside In/Inside Out, surveys contemporary environments and practices that challenge the traditional distinction between interior and exterior, therefore questioning the disciplinary boundaries of interior design.
The talk primarily addresses how her design practice engages Interior elements (curtains, floor finishes, ceilings, backdrops, or doors) performing as time-specific interventions and experimental communication devices. This volume of work seeks to interrogate and expand the role (semiotics and performance) of conventional interior elements. Sometimes these elements are deployed in exterior environments and sometimes introduced as external qualities with the interior realm.
