SOI Interim Director and Director of Graduate Studies Gregory Marinic has been awarded the 2018-19 ACSA/AIA Housing Design Education Award for “What Would Jane Do?,” a graduate Interiors studio project that engaged the urban theories of Jane Jacobs and retail obsolescence in the Ohio Valley as dual catalysts for housing innovation. The studio introduced students to an interdisciplinary and multi-scalar approach to contemporary design practice with a program incorporating architecture, urban design, interiors, and building conservation.
Students interacted with the lessons of Jane Jacobs to speculatively adapt dead malls into mixed-use communities offering complexity, diversity and housing for all. “I would like to recognize our graduate students – Emily Preece, Heather Hemmer, Allison Holliman and Olivia VonBokel – for contributing their talents and aspirations to this project,” said Marinic.
