Dr. Adrian Parr to Lecture on Urban Clear-cutting
The leveling of cities, such as Aleppo or Gaza, is an instance of urban clear-cutting because it uniformly removes entire human habitats. Just as clear cutting a forest destroys the habitats of wildlife, so too does the erasure of an urban environment. Reducing the built environment to a pile of debris and rubble swiftly eliminates where people live and the services they rely upon to survive. To date, dealing with the debilitating ramifications of war is largely the political terrain of peace activists, humanitarian aid workers, and human rights advocates. This presentation – Nov. 1 at 5 p.m. in the Whitehall Classroom Building Room 106 – by guest lecturer Dr. Adrian Parr will examine how built environments are turned into a weapon of war.
