Karen Hudson

Visiting Assistant Professor

Dr. Hudson is a visiting assistant professor of Historic Preservation at the UK College of Design. A folklorist and historic preservationist by training, she is particularly interested in integrating folklore methodologies into preservation practice in order to advocate for more humanistic, diverse and just preservation policies. Her career spans 30 years of practice, research, leadership, writing and teaching. Her current research explores the architectural history of Southern Appalachia, particularly the cultural landscapes and material culture that touch on gender, sexuality and class. Dr. Hudson is currently completing a book manuscript for the University Press of Kentucky on the architectural history of the Kentucky Mountain settlement school movement. She is also investigating the use of digital humanities to teach, research, communicate and experience the built environment. She has served as the principal investigator, project manager, architectural historian or historian on hundreds of cultural resource management projects.
